WHAT TO PACK IN YOUR HOSPITAL BAG
Packing your hospital bag is one of those tasks that can sneak up on you — and suddenly feel a bit overwhelming. There’s a balance between being prepared and not overpacking, and the truth is: you don’t need everything, just the things that bring you comfort, function, and calm.
We’ve put this guide together based on real experiences, feedback from our community, and what actually gets used (versus what sounds good on paper). Take what works for you, leave what doesn’t — and remember, you’ve got this.
For You (Mum)
- Comfortable pyjamas or nursing-friendly nightwear
- Maternity bras
- A robe or loose cardigan
- Slippers or socks with grip
- High-waisted maternity underwear (disposable or soft cotton)
- Maternity pads
- Toiletries (toothbrush, cleanser, lip balm, dry shampoo, hair ties)
- Light face towel or facial mist
- Phone charger (ideally with a long cord)
- A folder for paperwork or documents
- Snacks you actually like (energy bars, crackers, mints)
- Water bottle with straw lid
- Optional: small speaker, calming essential oil roller, eye mask
For Baby
- Nappies (check if your hospital provides them)
- Wipes
- 2–3 onesies or zip suits
- Socks and beanie (depending on season)
- Swaddles or wraps
- Gentle baby wash
- Baby blanket
- Going-home outfit
- Car capsule or seat (already installed in the car)
For Your Support Person
- Change of clothes
- Snacks and drinks
- Pillow or small blanket
- List of contacts or tasks to help manage
- Entertainment (headphones, Kindle, etc.)
Our Personal Tip
Keep your items organised in smaller sections or pouches so you’re not rummaging mid-contraction or at 3am. This is where something like The Caddy Bag can really help — it doubles as a hospital bag, change station, and pram organiser later on.
A Final Word
There’s no one right way to pack your hospital bag — and you might not use every item you bring. But having it packed and ready can bring a surprising sense of calm. It’s one less thing to think about in the lead-up to one of the most important days of your life.
You’ve got this.
And we’re cheering you on — every step of the way.
